3 Symptoms of Bad Valve Seals and Piston Ring

Valve seals and Piston Rings plays a very significant role in the proper functioning of the internal combustion engine. In this article we will give you brief details about valve seals like what they are? How do they work? And what are the warning signs for them which you should never ignore so that you will be able to replace them before serious damage occurs to your engine.

Function of Piston Rings:

Piston Rings give a lot of aid in proper combustion in the cylinder it has four main functions and these are located between cylinder and Piston.

1 Compression Seal:

This seal prevents from losing pressure in the combustion chamber and avoids leakage of high-pressure gasses which produces as result of a blast in the combustion chamber.

2 Heat Transfer:

when we start the engine and each time combustion occurs, this phenomenon raises the temperature tremendously in the combustion chamber which can cause serious damage to the piston. Ring Piston helps the piston to transfer its excess heat to the walls of the cylinder.

3 Lubrication Control:

Piston needed certain amount of oil for its lubrication to work properly because due to high temperature the size of the piston expands which could increase friction with its surrounding components and can cause permanent damage but too much oil going toward piston is also dangerous that’s why ring pistons are designed to control the volume of oil reaches the piston.

4 Piston Support:

The rings helps the piston to move in fixed position in the cylinders as we know the piston oscillates thousand times per mint if any change in the position of the piston occurs the piston will get hit with the walls of the cylinder and can cause serious damage which is why piston rings plays vital role in the proper functioning of the engine.

Functions of the Valve Seals:

Valves are located on the top of the cylinder and control the amount of mixture of air and fuel which goes into the cylinder and it also helps to prevent the leakage of high-pressure combustion gasses, the valves also have seal which consists of super strength rubber material which is locate in the small collar of the valve stem top’s area. When these seals are worn out you will notice that the staling and poor performance of the engine when you increase the acceleration on a long journey.

Symptoms of the Bad Valves Seals and Piston Rings:

1 Exhaust Smoke:

When your rings piston or valve seals are worn out then you will notice that burning smell from the exhaust of the engine and in severe cases light- gray or blue-gray smoke comes out from the exhaust which is a clear sign that oil is burning in the combustion chamber.

2 Too Much Oil Being Consumed:

As I mentioned above that engine oil gets consumed in the combustion chamber when seals are worn out, which can decrease the level of the oil and can cause further serious damages.

3 Not Enough Accelerating Power:

When there is a damage of piston rings and valve seals, the pressure in the combustion chamber will be reduced because of high-temperature gasses leaks out to the other parts of the engine which reduces the performance of the engine and also you will not be able to accelerate when you put foot on the gas pedal and try to overtake another car on a high way which can lead to accident, so it is important for you to repair your vehicle at time before it’s too late.
