What Maintenance Schedule Should you Follow for Your Vehicle?

Find out what your car's maintenance schedule looks like to avoid costly repairs. Here are 13 components you need to check regularly. Being a responsible car owner means sticking to a maintenance schedule for your car to ensure its durability. Why? The more you take care of your car, the longer it will last.

Guidelines to Properly Maintain your Car:

When it comes to a car's maintenance schedule, most experts agree on the following:

  1. Regular maintenance of the oil and the oil filter is extremely important. It should be scheduled every 5,000-10,000 km or every three months.
  2. Adjustments are essential to ensure that the spark plugs and filters are on point. The time to replace spark plugs, belts, and hoses vary by make and model of car. As a general rule, replacement should be scheduled every 60,000-100,000 km for spark plugs and every 80,000-100,000 km for belts and hoses.
  3. Replacing the air filter is recommended every 20,000 to 30,000 km. A replacement of the fuel filter is recommended every 50,000 to 100,000 km.
  4. Replace your car's drive belt at least every 4-5 years. If it breaks, replace it immediately.
  5. Add an additive (or cleaner) to the fuel system every 5,000-10,000 km to improve engine performance.
  6. Lights and tire pressure should be checked monthly.
  7. Tire rotation and brake inspection should be performed at every oil change or every 10,000 km.
  8. You should bleed the cooling system every three years or every 80,000-100,000 km. Check for leaks, blockages, and contamination, as well as corrosion or oxidation issues, in your cooling system.
  9. Regular bleeding of brake fluid every two years ensures that your brake system is functioning properly.
  10. Bleeding the power steering system is recommended at least every 50,000 km.
  11. You should plan to change the manual transmission fluid at least every 50,000 km.
  12. Change the transmission fluid and filter. The frequency of changing the automatic transmission fluid and filter may vary, but you should not go beyond 100,000 km without doing so.
  13. It is recommended that the automatic single / dual-clutch manual transmission fluid change or differential fluid service be performed every 50,000 km. In fact, it should be done at the same time as the manual transmission fluid change.

Rely on User or Manufacturer's Manual:

If in doubt about maintaining your car, rely on the owner's manual or the manufacturer's website for specific information regarding your make and model. If an emergency light comes on, see your mechanic immediately.
