Lighting: what are the different points to check on a car?

The quality of the latest generation bulbs is today much higher than what we could have known a few years ago. However, even with the arrival of LED lights, it is important to regularly check the lighting of your car. In addition to incurring a fine, defective lighting can pose safety problems, especially at night or on cloudy days. In addition, the regulations in force impose standards to be respected in terms of lighting.

Applicable regulations:

The use and operation of the lighting in a car are regulated. The French Highway Code indeed requires to have lights emitting a yellow or white light towards the front and a red light towards the rear. The use of bulbs of another color, as can often be seen on the front of certain cars - blue or green pilot lights for example - is prohibited.

Points to check:

Unfortunately, the bulbs of our cars are not eternal and we must replace them from time to time. It is therefore important to regularly check the state of its lighting, to avoid possible inconvenience. Do not hesitate to seek assistance to test the proper functioning of all the lights as well as the signaling. Position, dipped, main, reversing, stop, fog lights, indicators. Operate each of the controls in turn, in particular, the brake pedal to test the brake lights. To see and be seen in all weathers, but also so that users can anticipate your maneuvers, the lighting and signaling must be kept in perfect working order.

Replace defective bulbs:

If a bulb fails, replace it immediately. Except for the latest generation models adopting LED technology, this operation can be carried out by everyone and requires very little tools, either at the front or at the rear. Be aware that a faulty bulb often leads to the rapid rupture of the opposite bulb , following the transfer of a higher current intensity on the latter. The front bulbs are most often accessible through the engine compartment. For the rear lights, a single screw generally makes it possible to disassemble the entire block and access the elements to be replaced.

Well-regulated lights:

Our elders eagerly awaited each year the lighting campaigns carried out at the start of the fall by the police. Today, these campaigns have disappeared and the setting of the headlights is now our responsibility . A properly adjusted headlight should illuminate properly without dazzling.

Tip: if other users regularly make calls to you from a lighthouse, especially at night, your lights are certainly poorly adjusted. A visit to the garage can be essential, a "reguloscope" is necessary to perfectly align the beam of your headlight. Often neglected, the lighting and signaling of the car must be checked regularly and maintained with care. When the weather conditions are not favorable, they guarantee your safety and that of others. Remember to check them as often as possible, especially if you do your maintenance yourself and rarely go through the garage box.
