What is Cruise Control?

Cruise Control is a system that automatically controls the speed of a car. It does so by taking over the throttle of the car to maintain a steady speed set by the driver. The purpose is to maintain and keep a steady speed without any outside intervention.

Cruise controls were being used even before the automobiles. James Watt developed a version as early as 17th century which allowed the steam engine to maintain a contestant speed up and down inclines. However, that was the earlier version of Cruise control. The modern cruise control was invented in late 1940s.

  • Working

The working of the cruise control is not complicated. It controls the speed of the vehicle as the driver does- by adjusting the throttle position. However, it engages the throttle valve by a cable connected to an actuator instead of pressing a pedal. The throttle valve controls the power and speed of the engine by restricting how much air it takes in.

You can set the cruise control with the cruise switches, which are commonly located on steering wheel. As a safety feature, cruise control system will release as soon as you hit the brake pedal.

However with the passage of time, the next big thing Adaptive Cruise Control is gaining popularity.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Adaptive Cruise Control is a modern feature that takes the functioning of cruise control to the next level. It slows down and speeds up to keep pace with the car in front of you.

  • Working

Like the normal cruise control, the driver sets a constant speed of the car. A radar sensor is located in the front end of the car locates traffic ahead of it and locks on the car in a lane. It instructs the car to stay 2 or 3 seconds (driver defines) behind the person car ahead of it.
