5 Common Mistakes That Can Ruin Your Transmission

Having the knowledge about your transmission and putting it into practice will have great impact on the lifespan of your transmission. However, result could be otherwise if you do not follow general guidelines about the transmission.

  • Forgetting To Service Your Transmission

An automatic transmission needs periodic turning every once in a while. It is like going to a doctor and having a checkup every year or so. Failing to service your transmission can result in the buildup of dirt and contamination that will lead to the improper functioning of your transmission. If you delay this checkup, the result could be the failure of transmission.

It is recommended to get the transmission serviced every 30,000 to 60,000 miles.  It is important because even if you get it checked after the problems arise, probably it could be too late to save it from transmission failure.

  • Running on Low Transmission Fluid

Running on low transmission fluid is a major problem for the transmission. Fluid is required for the lubrication of transmission parts, provide hydraulic pressure and cool itself from any heat it generates. Optimal fluid level means that your transmission will be working just as it should. Excessive heat is a bane of the automatic transmission.

You can prevent that from happening by checking the fluid levels regularly.  Also examine how dirty the fluid is.

  • Using the Wrong Type of Transmission Fluid

Using the wrong types of transmission fluid can be disastrous as running the low transmission fluid. There are many people, who believe that all the transmission fluids are essentially the same, which is not true. For the optimal performance specific transmission requires specific ATF. It is your responsibility to get the right transmission fluid for your vehicle.

Are you experiencing problems related to transmission and ignoring them? If you are experiencing any signs it means your immediate attention is required. Continuing to drive your car while red flags are warning you is taking a huge risk.
