5 Causes of a Car Blowing White Smoke from Exhaust

White Smoke coming out of the exhaust should not be terrifying. However, you need to understand the reason why this happens to avoid any problems.

If you turn the key of your gas vehicle and you notice white smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe, it could due to different reasons. One reason for this happening is common and completely harmless. But, sometimes you need to pay attention as it can be a sign of a major problem.

Condensation

It is a common occurrence and should not cause any worry. In colder climates, it can happen frequently. When it is cold outside and you notice white smoke just after starting the car, then you probably have nothing to worry about.

Probably you are aware of how steam is produced. When the warm or hot gases meet cold outside air, condensation and steam is a result. After you have driven for a while, the white smoke should lessen. It is a common occurrence and there is nothing to worry about.

Coolant Leak

In case the white smoke keeps coming out of the exhaust even after you have warmed up the engine or when accelerating, then the coolant might be leaking internally. Coolant leakage can be identified if the smoke keeps coming out and leaves a sweet odor in the environment. If you experience this, then it is related to coolant leaking.

The coolant usually leaks because of a possible crack in the cylinder head or even engine block. The coolant can leak and mix with the engine oil. It is how the exhaust smoke turns white. It needs only a little bit of coolant to get into the combustion and the white smoke is produced.

Piston Ring or Valve Seal Leak

Leaking valve seals or piston rings can also be the reason behind the white smoke coming out of the exhaust.  In this case, oil leaks into the combustion chamber and burns. It happens because of bad seals or piston rings. As a result, a white or light bluish smoke comes out of the exhaust pipe. You should take your vehicle to a nearby auto shop to get it fixed.

Bad Fuel Injector

It is another reason why white smoke may come out of the exhaust. A defective fuel injector usually one that is stuck open or is leaking from the O-ring will provide too much fuel to the combustion chamber.  This excessive fuel cannot properly burn in the engine and instead comes out as white or grey smoke out of the exhaust pipe. You should replace the bad injector (O-ring) if you want to solve this problem.

However, identifying the bad fuel injector may not be that easy. You may be required to replace all of these.

Incorrect Injector Pump Timing (Diesel Engines)

It can happen with diesel engines. Precision timing and fuel pressure of the injector pump is needed for a diesel engine. When the timing is not what is ideal, your engine will essentially be running rich which will cause fuel to not completely burn and instead exit out of the exhaust as white or grey smoke.
